Vietnam Airlines Joins IATA’S CO2 Emissions Project

Vietnam Airlines has signed a cooperation agreement to participate in the CO2 emissions measurement project, CO2 Connect, developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Signing the agreement at the recently concluded 80th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of IATA in Dubai, UAE, makes Vietnam Airlines the first Vietnamese airline to join this initiative.
Under the agreement signed, Vietnam Airlines will provide data for IATA to calculate average emissions per passenger for each route and aircraft type.
Reducing CO2 emissions and pursuing sustainable development are top priorities for the global aviation industry. However, the methods for declaring and measuring CO2 emissions vary, leading to inconsistencies among airlines.
To address this, IATA has developed the CO2 Connect project, establishing a common platform for accurate, transparent, and consistent CO2 emissions reporting and measurement.
The project utilizes the RP-1726 methodology, a highly reliable approach that aligns with industry standards.
One of the benefits of CO2 Connect is that it helps airlines and passengers make informed decisions and implement practical environmental solutions.
Among the major airlines that have since joined the project across the world included: American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, and Qatar Airways.
By participating in CO2 Connect, Vietnam Airlines demonstrates its commitment to sustainable development and contributes to the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, a commitment made by Vietnam at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2021 (COP26).
Previously, Vietnam Airlines had successfully operated a commercial passenger flight using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on May 27, thus becoming the first Vietnamese airline to do so.
